2-Day Zulu Cultural Tour
Durban – Durban

Day 1: Killie Campbell Museum / Shakaland (d)
After breakfast we depart for the Killie Campbell Museum in Durban where we begin to learn about the culture of the Zulu. From here we travel past lush sugarcane fields to the town of Eshowe for lunch and a visit to Fort Nongquayi and from here it’s onto the Nkwalini Valley to overnight at Shakaland. A traditional Zulu "Umuzi" or homestead, divided into the home of the Zulu`s and hotel rooms. This is an unique resort built on the set of the movies, Shaka Zulu and John Ross. Feel the pulsating rhythm of mysterious and magical Africa as you re-live the excitement and romance of the days of Shaka, King of the Zulus, in this authentic re-creation of the Great Kraal overlooking the Phobane Lake. Experience the sight of assegaai-wielding warriors, share the fascinating secrets of the Sangomas and witness traditional customs such as tribal dancing, spear making and the beer-drinking ceremonies.
Day 2: Shakaland / uMgungundhlovu / Ondini (Breakfast)
After the continuation of the cultural programme at Shakaland, we enjoy breakfast and depart for Ulundi and the historical site of King Cetshwayo's residence at oNdini which has been recreated on the exact site of the Royal capital following extensive archaeological excavation and the discovery of the original preserved mud and dung floors of the huts.
There is a site interpretative centre that has a fascinating display on the scale and layout of oNdini at the time of King Cetshwayo. Due to the enormity of the original capital only the isigodlo (the Royal enclosure) has been rebuilt. Cetshwayo's indlunkulu (the Great Hut) is particularly impressive and from the low opening it was possible to look half a kilometre downhill to the main entrance of the capital.
The oNdini Heritage Site also houses the KwaZulu Cultural Museum with exhibits of the history and arts of the Zulu people.
From here we travel back to Durban. |
