5-Day Kruger National Park
Johannesburg – Kruger Park – Johannesburg

We leave Johannesburg, either from the airport or from your overnight accommodation, and travel east to the world famous Kruger National Park. Depending on time of departure we would overnight in the Kruger National Park at any of the camps in the southern section of the Park. Our game viewing commences immediately upon entering the gates and en route to our overnight camp. We spend the duration of the safari inside the game reserve on extensive drives to various sectors of the Park, to maximise on the game viewing. An added option whilst in Kruger Park would be to spend one day exploring the Drakensberg Escarpment, (also known as the Panorama Route), here to see some of the stunning views on offer in this part of the country, in an area of the Blyde River Canyon, known as “God’s Window”, “Three Rondawels”, “Bourke’s Luck Potholes”, as well as some scenic waterfalls and the historical town of Pilgrims Rest.  Alternatively we could spend one night in accommodation on the Panorama Route, preferably on the last night if you so wish, before returning to Johannesburg.
Meals would be at the restaurants, cafeteria’s and picnic stops in the Park. Two other additional options, subject to availability, are a three hour “sun downer drive”, this in an open vehicle, with a South African National Parks ranger, to look for those elusive nocturnal species, which include leopard and lion. These drives usually depart an hour before gate closing time and return three hours later. We could also go on an early morning walk with armed rangers to experience the Park from a different perspective. This activity is offered at most camps but is subject to availability and for your own account and children under 16 are not permitted.
All accommodation is in air-conditioned, en-suite chalets inside the Kruger Park rest camps, and although not star-graded, are probably of a two or three star standard. We will return to Johannesburg late on the last day, or fly / drive out of Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport to Johannesburg, Cape Town or Durban.

ENQUIRIES AND RESERVATIONS

Day One – Johannesburg – Kruger Park
Initially we travel through Highveld industrial, mining and agricultural areas. Our guide will make this section interesting, adding value with his interpretation of the local history and sights. The scenery is pretty flat but this changes as we approach the Drakensberg Escarpment where we drop down to the Lowveld through scenic passes. This Drakensberg Escarpment area is really beautiful and has scenic vistas over the Lowveld of the Kruger National Park. We will try and find as much wildlife as possible as we proceed through to our first overnight destination. Dependant on availability of accommodation and concentration of the wildlife we will book the accommodation in the best possible areas of the game reserve to maximise on the viewing.

Day Two, Three, Four – Kruger Park
Kruger Park is an excellent venue with good sightings of lion, elephant, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, warthog, baboon, monkey, hippo and impala regularly seen. The more elusive animals like leopard are an exciting find. We recommend a night drive in an open safari vehicle on one of the evenings, this to enhance the possibility of seeing the nocturnal species such as leopard (always difficult to find), lion, hyena, genet, bush babies and then the other nocturnal animals such as the smaller cats, owls and nightjars. You also get to see most of the diurnal animals, with their eyes lighting up like a little town in the reflection of the spotlights when you chance on a herd of Impala.
We will spend our nights in Kruger in bungalow accommodation "B" type inside the Kruger Park - subject to availability. Although not graded, these bungalows are of a two or three star standard. Here the rooms have twin beds, each a private shower, toilet and hand basin en- suite. The brick under thatch rooms are equipped with air-conditioning, some also with ceiling fans and a fridge. There is insect proof screening on the doors and windows. You will be provided with bath and hand towels as well as soap.
Our meals will be at wayside cafes en route to and from the Park. In the game reserve we will have breakfast and dinners in the restaurants. Breakfast offers one from cereal, porridge, fruit, juice, and yoghurts through to a full cooked breakfast with eggs, bacon and then generally sausages and tomatoes or the like. Dinners are generally buffet style with soup, fish, a variety of meat dishes, a choice of roasts, vegetables and ending in sweets, cheese and biscuits and coffee. Lunches are usually snack type at one of the camps or at picnic stop cafes. Here the choice is limited to toasted sandwiches, burgers, fries and the like. We enjoy a full game-viewing programme for the balance of the day. Depending on which camps we will be staying at so the mid-day siesta period could be spent at the swimming pool - Kruger Park is pretty hot and humid in summer - or to visit one of the camp interpretation centres, which are always interesting.
We encourage an early start to make the most of the best time of day to view the animals. So first one out at dawn - this to see if we are able to sight some of the nocturnal predators returning to their daytime resting place and then to have breakfast possibly at a different locality. We recommend staying at different camps to make the most on what the Kruger Park has to offer and to get the best game viewing.
One of these days could be spent in visiting the Drakensberg Escarpment, also known as the Panorama Route, where we will visit the historical town of Pilgrims Rest and areas of the Blyde River Canyon, such as “God’s Window”, “Bourke’s Luck Potholes”, “Three Rondawels” and a waterfall or two in the area.
